Cold wave for most of the province starting this weekend.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for parts of northeast BC warning of the return of arctic air and a 28 degree drop in temperatures.
The meteorological agency warns of a cold wave in most of the province starting this weekend.
“Arctic air will invade BC beginning Friday night, with a major change in temperature from our mild January,” reads the weather statement, which so far includes the Williston area but not the Peace River regions. or Northern Rockies.
“Gusty winds will accompany the arrival of cold air, and the wind chill will make it feel even colder.”
Daytime temperatures have averaged highs of -3 degrees in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek so far this month, about six degrees warmer than the normal -9 degrees for this time of year.
Environment Canada forecasts highs of 5 degrees on Thursday and -6 on Friday, falling to -23 on Friday night in both cities, according to the seven-day forecast. Highs of -16 and -15 are forecast on Saturday and Sunday.
“Temperatures are expected to gradually increase late next week, early February,” says Environment Canada. “However, there remains significant uncertainty about the timing of the return to seasonal temperatures.”
In a separate forecast, The Weather Network says that changes in the jet stream will pull cold air south from the Arctic, where it “has been locked up in the north and Siberia.”
He’s forecasting “freezing cold” across most of Canada and deep into the United States, even forecasting a 6,000-kilometre band of snow that will stretch as far south as Mexico and Texas as far north as Atlantic Canada and Greenland for the next few days.
