Gators starting forward Alex Fudge is considered doubtful for Wednesday’s game as Florida returns home after a two-game road stretch to face South Carolina.
Fudge suffered a head injury in the first minute of the second half against Mississippi State on Saturday, hitting his head on the hardwood. The Jacksonville, Florida native did not return.
Now, as the Gators look to win their sixth game in the last seven appearances, head coach Todd Golden has updated Fudge’s status.
“Alex is day to day,” he said during a media availability on Tuesday. “I don’t think we’ll see him tomorrow night.
“He didn’t practice yesterday and we’ll see how he does in a while here. We’re not going to take him out until he’s ready from a health standpoint to help us win.”
Fudge is averaging 7.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game this season in 22 minutes per game. He coming off the bench to start the year before taking a starting role, taking over for C.J. Felder in the late stages of non-conference play, Fudge has provided Florida with an explosive presence in the No. 4 spot on both ends of the floor, specifically on the backboards.

“He’s played a lot for us and he’s done very well,” Golden said of the LSU transfer.
On the off chance that he can’t go, Golden said he’s comfortable with Will Richard’s inclusion in the four, either with Kowacie Reeves Jr. either riley kugel at three. That “small ball” lineup has helped the Gators find an offensive spark at points in the past two games.
“Yeah, their ability to tag multiple positions, really anything they can tag from one to four, that’s given us a huge boost in conference play,” Golden said.
“The fact that we can play those lineups and be as good as before on defense and pretty close to being as good as on the glass allows us to play with more space on offense, I think that’s a big reason as to why we’ve been able to get us going a bit.”
Florida hopes the talented forward returns to the lineup before facing a tough stretch of top-ranked opponents over the next two weeks.
The Gators will take on the Gamecocks at 7 pm EST on Wednesday.
