Good luck to you Leo Grande review
Having taken a long hiatus from this extremely exhausting job, I would love to say that I am back. Hilarious. In the span of a month, I have consumed enough movies and series that I have the urge to write my mind about them. None were as overwhelming as this one.
Good Luck To You, Leo Grande was an extremely long shot for the producers. It demands the audience’s attention but provides only two characters and one room. The two characters are Leo Grande and Nancy Stokes. With Emma Thompson playing the lead, so a great performance is guaranteed, this film elevates these guarantees with the sheer chemistry between her and Daryl McCormack.
The story is about Nancy Stokes who tries to bring adventure into her life by hiring a male escort. Big Leo sells a fantasy. He probes Nancy into letting her go. Both in terms of sex and life. Nancy wanted to fulfill everything that she didn’t have and for her, that was limited to sex, but through her time with Leo, she is able to discover many other aspects of power and intimacy.
Leo Grande is someone who enjoys his line of work. He likes his clients. He has a relationship with them because he believes that the regularity of their meetings is what makes the fantasy he is selling come true. Daryl himself is a dream, so the allure he aims to create is present regardless. His eagerness to do his best turns into introspection and nervousness, which is a surprise and a pleasure to watch. He really stole the movie.
It’s different for each person…
The best part of this movie was that none of the conversations were too stressful to handle. That being said, they brought out so many important components of relationships, expectations, and angst that my mind is still buzzing from the moment I watched the movie. Sexuality has always been an interesting discussion. As much as one thinks they know themselves in terms of sex, they never really do. Sex is much more than all the action. It is meant to be different for everyone. Everyone says that some aspects are necessary or nice, and it seems that it should be. In the movie, Nancy talks about how she has never experienced what sex looks like. She has never been on anyone or in any position other than missionary. Her insecurity of not being interesting stems from that.
The film through Leo Grande tries to address the issue of how sex is experienced. Perceived. As mentioned, Leo is a beautiful man. It’s part of his character. Nancy feels that for him she will not be pleasant and the derailment of thoughts begins. These are minute details that don’t normally come up in conversations. People have it ingrained in how bodies should look and if they don’t then what their type may be. A person assumes that he needs to be attractive in order to be liked by a socially attractive person.
At the same time, Leo is constantly aware of how his beauty is perceived. To him, her value is limited to whether she can keep looking good. The film has these thoughts and insecurities so carefully intertwined. They are communicated and directed with such delicacy that one feels comforted knowing that it is not just them.
Apart from great writing, the film also excels in cinematography. The way the hotel room is filmed makes it look like a sprawling area with each of its spots used with care. Although the room is quite small, one can only notice it with forced concentration. The atmosphere seems great when the chemistry with a person is so powerful. The only important thing is the person in front and nothing else seems to be in focus. That is also the ideology of the planes.
There are hardly any movies that are capable of making such intricate thoughts in such a careful way. Emma Thompson also makes the point of how she wanted to show that age shouldn’t affect one’s comfort with one’s body. It is a film that I am grateful to have seen.
Good Luck To You Leo Grande is a careful, beautiful and sensational film. It forces one to introspect and also comforts them about their own insecurities. A movie that everyone should see at least once.
