In recent years, the Pokémon series has allowed us to customize our trainers. We’re no longer stuck wearing Ash Ketchum’s second-hand garments – the drippings shown in games like Sword and Shield turned legendary.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet keeps customizable outfits, faces, and hair, but with one key difference: You’re now a school boy in a school uniform. As a result, customization is a bit more limited, but you can still show your style! Here’s how to change your clothes and appearance in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Once you have some new clothes in the bag, they can be changed at any time by pressing the left D-Pad button on the Joy-Con or controller.

Browse through the clothing categories with the left and right buttons on the D-Pad, select the clothes you want to try on with the up and down buttons, and press A to try things on.

You can preview the outfit by pressing Y.

Can you alter/remove the uniform?

You can switch between spring, summer, fall and winter outfits, but that’s about it. Your uniform stays on all the time, sorry. The uniform colors will also match your game: an orange-red for Scarlet and a bluish-purple for Violet.

Here are the differences:

  • Spring: Long skinny pants, off-white long-sleeved shirt with colored cuffs, tie and suspenders.
  • Summer: White short-sleeved shirt, tie and shorts.
  • Fall: Knee-length shorts, an off-white long-sleeved shirt with colored cuffs and a tie, and a puffy vest.
  • Winter: Long skinny pants, off-white shirt with tie, blue sweater and gray long-sleeved jacket with zipper.

How to take off that stupid hat

Go to the caps menu and press X to get rid of the school cap. You can also do it with gloves, socks and glasses.

Why don’t the hats load?

Some hairstyles are incompatible with hats. If your hats aren’t loading at all, that’s probably why.

How to change Rotom phone case

In the clothing menu, head to the right to find your Rotom Phone cases. You can get new ones at Delibird Presents and from a woman near the steps in Mesagoza.

How to change appearance

Press Y to open the outfit menu, then press the + button to open the appearance menu. Here, you can completely change your face, from the shape of your eyes to your makeup. You can also press the minus button to temporarily remove your glasses and hats so you can get a better preview of your look.

How to change hairstyle

Unfortunately, you cannot change your hairstyle in this menu, you will have to go to a salon. You can find them on your map in big cities, where they will appear as a scissors icon.

It costs $3,000 to change your hairstyle, so make sure you know what you want, but if you back out, it won’t cost you anything.

Where to buy new clothes

Clothing stores can be found in the cities: Mesagoza, Levicia and Cascarrafa. Open the map while you’re in one of these locations, and you’ll see the stores marked on your map: the ones with a small t-shirt are the fashion boutiques. These will often be listed as simply “Fashion Street”, which is a row of fashion-focused stores.

This is what they sell:

  • de bagin – bags
  • capburg – hats
  • Zapaldea – shoes
  • sock quarter – stockings
  • spec hut – glasses

There are also general fashion stores, with specific styles:

  • rough and hard — sporty and casual
  • veracity — high-end fashion (think designer brands and huge price tags)
  • safe style – biker gear

Hopefully, even though we can’t change our actual outfits, there’s still enough customization left to make your mark on the world and represent yourself in style.
